Surf Graphics

Legendary surf and skate illustrator Jim Phillips (the man behind the famous Santa Cruz Screaming Hand) introduces Korero’s latest collection of eye-popping alternative artwork in Surf Graphics. A new 250 page hardback book following a trend established with their previous titles, Kustom GraphicsBurlesque Poster Design and Skullface, in which they pack hundreds of pages of the best examples from these sub-genres.

Most of the artwork comes out of Southern California, with a few other artists scattered around the world, and offers you a glimpse into an ideal world full of sun, surf, hot rods, babes and beach parties by renowned artists such as the incredible Rick Rietveld, Jim PhillipsBill Ogden and Damian Fulton. Much of the work is produced for commercial clients including Quicksilver, Vans and the like, interspersed with personal pieces making for a good mix of work and play.

A short bio is provided on each artist in which it may come as no surprise that most share similar influences with the names Rick Griffin, Stanley Mouse, Ed Roth and Robert Williams popping up repeatedly. Sadly there’s not much explanation of technique included for us process junkies, but to be fair, this isn’t that type of book. It’s a reference title full of work that shouts about an amazing lifestyle that most of us can only dream of, shown through vivid visuals and on that note it scores top marks.

Great fun, great artwork, inspiring stuff.
