Mastering Type

Mastering Type - The Wing's Art Book Review

A grounding in the correct use of type is essential for any Graphic Designer. Effective use of typography are skills that will be called upon again and again in virtually all areas of designer’s career and once you have a grasp on the basics, simple errors become glaringly obvious and easily avoided.

Mastering Type: The Essential Guide to Typography by Denise Bouler (Illustrator, Graphic Designer and Professor of Communication Design) offers excellent reference title covering every facet of typography starting with a brief history (hieroglyphics, early alphabets and the Gutenberg printing press) moving on to letters, words, sentences, paragraphs, page layouts and digital media. Detailed guides into the minutiae of characters, letterforms, computer fonts, alignment and spacing are presented in an engaging fashion with contributions from noted designers such as Ken Barber (House Industries) and Holly Tienken (Design Grace) amongst others.

It’s certainly the solid foundation that novices need and a useful reference for existing designers to keep on the shelf, but beware, this kind of education comes with a price. Once the lessons are learned you will inevitably become one of those annoying people (myself included) who just can’t resist pointing out to friends and colleagues some poor kerning or an inappropriate use of Comic Sans.
