I can’t claim to be much of a gamer nowadays. My PS3 has long been reduced to a simple blu-ray player and with every new instalment of Call of f Duty, Medal of Honour or Assassins’s Creed, I become a little more disinterested. So it was with some surprise that I was actually rather impressed by Titan’s latest, The Art of Assassin’s Creed III. A book that contains evidence of a throughly and intelligently researched revolutionary epic.
Of particular note are a collection of concept paintings that depict huge battleships engulfed in even larger waves, and others of the resulting depressed shipwrecks. Digital paintings that are reminiscent and as accomplished as a Turner oil painting, and equally full of atmosphere. The human roles are similarly well conceived with historical figures such as George Washington and General Lee brought to life in convincing fashion by the Ubisoft artists, along with 18th century versions of New York City and Boston that boast of the care and attention given to the game’s historical authenticity.
It’s an impressive collection of artwork that celebrates what appears on the surface to be a highly accomplished and cinematic game. These development paintings and sketches certainly have the atmosphere part nailed and are immersive enough just as drawings. I hope the final game delivers on this book’s promise; maybe a reader can provide their verdict.
