Star Wars Art: Concept

Star Wars Concept 01

The award-winning director Joe Johnston (The Rocketeer, Captain America) introduces Star Wars Art: Concept with an affectionate look back at his early career working as a storyboard artist on the original trilogy. An experimental time where Star Wars wasn’t yet the cultural phenomenon we all now know and a fitting introduction to this new book that delves into a previously unseen design process, presenting ideas dating back to the very beginning where “Luke” Skywalker appears as a girl against a Mos Eisley landscape, right up to the latest 1313 video game. Boasting a wide variety of artistic styles, characters, locations and vehicles, standout work comes from Ralph McQuarrie, Doug Chiang and also Hajime Sorayama, with an incredible series of airbrushed “Betty Droids” that simply jump of the page, both for their quality and for just how unexpectedly risqué they are within the Star Wars universe. Such great work often lost and unused in service of the final product, but full of great ideas deserving of the celebration this book provides, and pure eye-candy for Star Wars fans.
